Shillong located in the north-eastern part of India is the capital and a hill station of Meghalaya. It is also known as “The Abode of Clouds”. The Europeans who visited this place said  that the hills around the town reminded of Scotland. They nicknamed it the “Scotland of the East”. Shillong is a hot spot for tourists from all over the world. People travel for thousands of kilometres to see this beauty. Although it has got a variety of places to be visited here are some of the few which are the best, which is considered the best spots under Shillong tourist places.

MAWLYNNONG

This small village is located in the east Khasi district. In 2003 it has won the title of Asia’s cleanest village and India’s most cleanest village in 2005. It is referred as God’s own garden by the locals.

UMIAM LAKE

This tourist place is situated at a distance of 15km to the north of Shillong. Being surrounded by few islands and also containing a park adjoined to it, makes this lake a great picnic spot for tourists. People who seek adventure can enjoy various water-sports like kayaking, water cycling, boating and scooting.

ELEPHANT FALLS

Located at 12kms from the city, this place is one of the most popular tourist sites in Shillong. It is a collection of three waterfalls merging into a single one.

MAWSYNRAM

Along with Cherapunjee, this place receives a high amount of rainfall annually. Here we experience mother nature at its best with the blue skies and greenery everywhere.

SHILLONG PEAK

Shillong Peak is the highest peak in Meghalaya with an altitude of 1965 metres above sea level. The town was named after this peak. Tourists get a vivid and clear view of the city below along with the Himalayas in front. It is the best destination for photographers and nature lovers.

WARD’S LAKE

Ward’s lake is also known as the Polok Lake by the locals. An artificial lake surrounded by gardens. A beautiful spot to hang out during the evenings.

LADY HYDARI PARK

The park is dedicated to the first lady of province – Lady Hydari. It has got a wide variety of flower and trees and also has its own miniature zoo consisting of 73 bird species and around 100 reptiles.

GARO HILLS, KHASI HILLS AND JAINTIA HILLS

These ranges are known for its variety of flora and fauna and is a great place to explore.

DAVID SCOTT TRAIL

One of the most popular trekking spots in Meghalaya. This trail was laid down by David Scott, a British Officer. It is used as a communication path between Assam and Bangladesh.

DIENGIEI PEAK

Situated on the western side of Shillong has been a peak just a few metres shorter than the tallest peak in Shillong, the Shillong Peak. Due to its steep ascendancy, it is very suitable for mountain climbing.

MEGHALAYA STATE MUSEUM

It is a great attraction for tourists as it exhibits a variety of ancient artifacts about the place and also displays the various tribes that roamed around this place during ancient times.
